The Brief

Miss World, the global pageant show with a worldwide audience of millions, commissioned Decibel Technology with the task of creating the world’s first global voting app for Miss World 2014.

They desired for their global audience to be able to participate in the event by being able to vote for their top 3 contestants as part of the "People's Choice" award. The winning contestant being given the chance to compete as a finalist.

The nature of the event meant that a large concentration of traffic would occur during the televised global event and careful consideration would need to be given to deliver a resilient global network that could handle the traffic volumes.

The application also needed to provide premium video content from MissWorld TV as well as being multi-lingual and available worldwide on both iOS and Android platforms.

What We Did

Planning

Provided project planning services including technical consultation and liaison.

Mobile App Build

A hybrid mobile application was developed which provided a single code base that was delivered to iOS and Android

Infrastructure

Built a bespoke global managed hosting solution that scaled for the competition period to handle millions of request.

Multi-lingual

Both App and API included support for four languages including English, French, Spanish and Chinese.

The Miss World App received an average rating of 4.5 stars and we processed nearly a million votes from all over the world as part of the people's choice award.

The Solution

Whilst pageant shows are normally only affected by the Judges decisions, in this case, we delivered an app to involve the whole audience.

Decibel Technology built a global voting infrastructure that combined a robust back-end with a hybrid mobile application at the front end. This allowed us to maintain a single code base that we could deploy to both iOS and Android devices.

We built that application on top of the Ionic Framework, which allowed us to leverage technologies such as Cordova, for access to device APIs and Angular JS for rapid development and fast UI. On the back-end we created a bespoke server infrastructure which leveraged Load-balanced severs and a Global CDN Network.

The bespoke voting mechanism was able to handle global voting traffic that totalled almost 1 million votes, and also served locally relevant content. The app received over 3k reviews on Google Play with an average rating of 4.3/5 during the competition.
